Food and Drink in Argentina: Why to Go
Argentinean cuisine is a melange of continental European (Spanish, Portuguese, German, Austrian and many others), native Indigenous, African and Asian. Some of the most favored foods are sausage, pasta and desserts which are also common to Europe and North America. Some of the local delicacies include empanadas (stuffed pastry), locro (mix of beans, meat, bacon, corn, gourd and onions), humitas and yerba mate (a tea which is considered Argentina's national drink). Spicy Spanish sausage (chorizo) and even a milk caramel jam called Duce de Leche.
Common foods
Some of the most common foods in the Argentine diet are their high protein meats such as beef, which is cooked on the barbecue (asado). Steak and ribs are both very popular as is spicy pork sausage, black pudding, cracklings and a special type of sweetbread called mollejas. In parts of the country, especially Patagonia, lamb and goat are the most common meat. Common snacks are breaded and fried meat which is most often eaten as a sandwich. Vegetables, salads made from mashed potatoes, as well as tomatoes, onions, lettuce, squashes and eggplant are very important in the Argentine diet.
International foods
Of course, for the tourist, a little taste of home is never far away in Argentina. Because of it's International cuisine, Argentina also offers a solution for those who miss something. Pizza, pasta, lasagna and ravioli are all available in many places. Hamburgers, hot dogs and pies are all over the place. As is German sausage, Jewish kosher, Arabic halal and Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. There is even a Welsh community who are famous for their tea houses that serve scones, jam and cream.
Argentine drinks
Argentina's traditional drink is an infusion of herbs called yerba mate. This traditionally made drink is sweetened with sugar or flavored with orange peel and cinnamon to hide a bitter taste. Yerba mate is an important social ritual. Beer, wine and soda are all available of course. In Argenina, soda is actually wine mixed with carbonated water. The national beer is Quilmes and is from Buenos Aires.
Central region
Why to go to the Central region of Argentina is partly because of the cuisine. This area is around the capital Buenos Aires and is actually based a lot in traditional Italian meals. This area is also known for its cattle and thus beef is an important part of their diet. There is asado and dulce de leche, but also very popular is the milanesa, which is basically breaded meat. Roast beef, pizza are all typical to this area. Some pizza specialties include stuffed pizza, grilled pizza and mushroom pizza. Bread made from chickpea flour is also made as is all different types of pasta used in Italian style meals.
The provinces
The provinces of Argentina host a variety of very delicious and unique snacks and styles. Garden vegetables are all very important and one typical meal is the locro, which is a stew made from different types of corn grains. Maize cake, homemade liquors, distilled wine and many more are all part of the provincial cuisine.
